Faculty Diversity Award

Faculty Diversity Award 2009-10

We are pleased to announce the Faculty Diversity Award for academic year 2009-2010. In establishing this award, Washington State University recognizes distinctive and outstanding teaching, research or creative work and/or service or outreach by faculty that advance diversity in the university and the communities we serve.

Criteria for the awards, nomination and application forms are attached. Please submit nominations or applications to Alex Tan, Campus: 1013 or email to alextan@wsu.edu by January 15, 2010.

The recipient will receive the award and be recognized at Showcase 2010 on March 26, 2010.

Dr. Michael Pavel, College of Education, was the inaugural recipient in 2008. Dr. Steve Burkett, Sociology and the Graduate School, received the award in 2009. We encourage last year’s nominees and applicants to resubmit their materials for consideration this year.

We encourage you to submit nominations or applications for this award of distinction. You can access the nomination forms by visiting the Office of the Provost (http://provost.wsu.edu) or The Division of Student Affairs, Equity and Diversity (http://thedivision.wsu.edu).

Objective:

To recognize distinctive and outstanding teaching, research or creative work and/or service/outreach that advance diversity at Washington State University.

Diversity is the variety of cultures, world views, values and personal experiences that may result from differences in race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, language, abilities, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, geographic region, and more.

Criteria:

The award will recognize outstanding accomplishments and general impact in any or all of the following areas:

Teaching: development and implementation of effective strategies for teaching that advance understanding of underrepresented groups in the field of instruction and/or for advancing the education of students from underrepresented groups in the field of instruction and to include activities such as classroom instruction; direction of independent study, theses and dissertations; and mentoring.

Research or Creative Work: new knowledge or creative work that advances understanding of underrepresented groups in the field of study and/or has the potential to improve the quality of life among underrepresented groups in the field of study.

Service/Outreach: activities that promote the professional and/or academic advancement of underrepresented groups in the applicant’s field of study; contributions to diversity and equal opportunity in the university through activities such as recruitment and mentoring of faculty and students; activities that promote the well-being of underrepresented communities in the applicant’s field of study.

Eligibility:

Fulltime faculty at WSU.

Selection Process:

A sub-committee of the Faculty Diversity Committee will evaluate nominations and applications, select finalists, and recommend one award winner to the provost and the vice president for student affairs, equity and diversity.
